Prediction results

A few weeks on, let's have a look back at the results of my earlier predictions.

The island will be split by a war between freighteries and pretty much everyone else.

TRUE

We will see Walt again on the island.

SEMI-TRUE - we saw him again, but in Hurley's flashforward.

Sayid, Desmond and Michael will take over the freighter. Michael will die in the process.

SEMI-TRUE - they effectively took over the freighter, but by peaceful means once Keamy and his men had gone. Michael died, but not in this process.

Penelope Widmore will arrive on the island to rescue Desmond.

TRUE

Similarly to shutting down the Tempest, the freighteries will attempt to "shut down" the monster.

FALSE

This attempt will be stopped by Locke, Ben and Jacob.

FALSE - although the trio did work together to stop Keamy's men.

The freighteries will start a hunt for Ben Linus, killing Claire in the process.

PROBABLY TRUE - they did start the hunt for Ben, and seeing as Claire appeared to Kate in a flashforward (which so far only dead people have done), I assume Claire has died.

The monster will kill all the freighteries.

PRETTY MUCH TRUE - it killed most of them

Penny and her team will save Des and the Oceanic 6, but Kate will have to choose who out of Jack and Sawyer to take with her.

SEMI-TRUE - The O6 were rescued by Penny, and Sawyer was sacrificed in order to save them, but not by Kate's choice.

There will be some mysterious events happening.

TRUE

Demond will make an appearance.

TRUE

Jack will be seen wearing a shirt.

TRUE

Sayid will fix some shit.

TRUE

Paolo Maldini will have a fight against the monster and win.

TRUE - it happened on the other side of the island - have you been wondering where Smokey's been since 4x09?

Score: 10.5/14 - not bad at all, even if some of them were a bit reservist.

What is the island? Part 2.

A case study: Homo floresiensis.

Perhaps you may know the above species better as a "hobbit" - a part of the genus homo and a not too distant relation of us. Remains of this species were found on the Indonesian island of Flores in 2003. An interesting question is simply "why are they so ruddy small?". The answer is simple - evolution is the mutation of genes and the subsequent passing on of the new genes to the next generation, and the next, and so on. When this occurs on islands, the changes become exaggerated, and evolution occurs much more quickly than before due to inbreeding. On the same island in fact, the same effect occured in reverse for rats - they became much bigger and produced Flores Giant Rats. These processes are known as Island Dwarfism and Island Gigantism.

Remember that part - it's going to come in useful in a second. But first, do you remember that brilliant rock Lodestone from my last post? If not, I suggest you go quickly back Part 1 of "What is the island?". If so, please continue. Lodestone is a variety of Magnetite rock, crystals of which have been found in the brains of humans - they act as a sort of inner compass in your head and help you with navigation. I'm not quite sure how they get into your brain, as rock doesn't exactly seem like the kind of organic material that could be constructed by proteins in your body. I'll have to ask my Biology teacher about that one as soon as I can (I'll get back to you when I've found out). But the important thing is that they are there and are presumably biologically produced and therefore part of the genetic code of humans. Now, I know what you're thinking if you're analysing this at all critically - "how come I don't know which way is North then?". That's because this magnetite deposit, hidden in the ethmoid bone behind your nose, is vesitigial - that is, it has lost its previous function in our species, similar to your appendix. However, in some birds (specifically pigeons), the magnetite has a huge effect on migration and magnetoreceptory detection of North and South.

Now come back to the idea of island gigantism/dwarfism and apply the same theory with this magnetite deposit in your brain. If there was an isolated island community, ancestors of which had, by accident of mutation, particularly large amounts of this magnetite, the effect of gene-exaggeration would occur. Perhaps, even, this island community also evolved to have just four toes...

Now remember Lost is, real as it may sometimes seem, still a fictional show, as I am about to dive head-first into something a bit ridiculous, with room for inaccuracy. Remember me speculating that the island was made of a magnetic rock - like Lodestone? Imagine for a second a polar effect occuring between magnetite in this new species' brains (henceforth, we'll call them Homo Abramiens) and the rock of the island. Could the Homo Abramiens exert a control over the rock? Could they manipulate it with their minds? Could they, oh I don't know, construct a large statue using this, or move around a large dust cloud of rock as if it were a living column of smoke? Maybe they could go as far as to be able to make projections of themselves, or others, appear. Or maybe they could use the magnetite almost as an extension of their own mind, and scan the minds of others with it. Hopefully you can draw your own conclusion about where I'm going from here.

Not exactly perfectly scientific, but since when was Lost supposed to be pefectly accurate?

Here ends part 2 of my "What is the island?" series.

What is the island? Part 1.

Ah, the ultimate question. What is the island? What exactly is it about it that makes it so special? This is the start of a long series of articles which will try to answer that issue.

Well, we all know that Lost features the idea of "electromagnetism" prominently. The only problem is that this is in danger of becoming an all-encompassing explanation for anything mysterious happening. "Why did X happen?" - "electromagnetism, of course". I think we need to clarify exactly what this idea is.

An Electromagnetic field is one that exerts a force on particles with an electric charge. This field is caused by electromagnetic induction (a law discovered by Faraday). To basically explain induction, imagine a coil of wire. If you pass a magnet through it, this will generate an electromotive force, drawing current with it. "Current" is the term for the flow of electric charge - the basic idea of electricity.

Well, it's good to clear things up with a Science lesson. The question which arises from this is: what does this all mean in terms of the island? I'm afraid we're going to have to dive back into science again to explain this one.

Take everyone's favourite molecule - water.

As you can see, the two hydrogens are arranged to one side of the molecule while the oxygen is on the other. This creates an interesting effect - oxygen having a slight negative charge and hydrogen a slight positive charge. The water molecule is in fact polar - it has a positive and negative end, a North and a South, which generates the phenomenon we call "surface tension" - water molecules stick to eachother.

While fascinating, this may not seem entirely relevant. But believe me, I'm going somewhere with this. We do not often think of water as a polar material - it's generally thought of as... just water. Apply a similar idea to rock - when was the last time you saw a rock with magnetic attraction? Admittedly, water is not magnetic as it has no field, but its molecular makeup gives it an unusual polar characteristic and that is my point.

There is indeed a type of rock which generates a magnetic field - lodestone. If you put iron filings near this rock, they will be attracted! In fact, this could be used as a basic form of compass.

Perhaps you can see my ideas all falling into place now. Lost's island could well be of volcanic origin (due to the fact that there is a volcanic crater on the island) and so my theory is that the island is built upon an igneous rock, similar to lodestone, which has unique magnetic properties. And if this makes the island itself just a huge magnet, then all we're missing is a huge coiled metal wire and we've got ourselves one giant Faraday Magnetic Field Inducer.

Here ends part 1 of the "What is the island?" series.

Predictions for the 2nd half of Season 4

Here's a radical list, in no real order, of my predictions for episode 9 onwards. As always, I'm using no spoiler information, just inuition and guesswork.

  • The island will be split by a war between freighteries and pretty much everyone else.

  • We will see Walt again on the island.

  • Sayid, Desmond and Michael will take over the freighter. Michael will die in the process.

  • Penelope Widmore will arrive on the island to rescue Desmond.

  • Similarly to shutting down the Tempest, the freighteries will attempt to "shut down" the monster.

  • This attempt will be stopped by Locke, Ben and Jacob.

  • The freighteries will start a hunt for Ben Linus, killing Claire in the process.

  • The monster will kill all the freighteries.

  • Penny and her team will save Des and the Oceanic 6, but Kate will have to choose who out of Jack and Sawyer to take with her.

Obviously, most, if not all, of these will turn out to be false. I'll add a couple of vague ones just to make sure I get a couple right:

  • There will be some mysterious events happening.

  • Demond will make an appearance.

  • Jack will be seen wearing a shirt.

  • Sayid will fix some shit.

And I'll throw this prediction out there, just in case.

  • Paolo Maldini will have a fight against the monster and win.

Welcome to my Lost blog!

I assume that, since you've come to this blog, you're a Lost fan. If not, where have you been? This is the greatest TV show ever made, without doubt. But who am I to judge?

Anyway, back to my blog. You may be wondering why I bothered making one, especially considering the large number of Lost blogs available on the internet, most of which I'm sure will provide much better theories and spoiler information than mine.

Ah well, that is purposeful (obviously). I'm not here to attempt spoil the future of this great show for you - in fact I hate accidentally reading spoilers and wouldn't dream of subjecting you to the same fate. I don't even watch sneak peeks of future episodes, prefering instead for everything I see to be new to me.

What I'm here to do is to speculate on the future and analyse the past of Lost simply based on evidence we have already been provided with. Hopefully you'll get a more in depth view into the way recent revelations change our views of previous events.

Enough of that though. I'll try to keep the page updated frequently, even during periods when Lost isn't running on TV. So don't forget to come back.

About Me

i AM LOST ADDICT - AND WILL ONCE AND FOR ALL GET TO THE SQUARE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM OF CHARLIES DEATH!!! ;-)
